The Seven Sisters cliffs on the south coast of England is one of the most lovely, scenic places in the whole of the UK, and a tour there from London makes for an ideal day trip.
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the Seven Sisters cliffs several times, having lived in Brighton for a number of years, and found the place and the surrounding areas to be strikingly gorgeous and memorable.

The Seven Sisters is a series of amazing chalk cliffs on the Sussex coast that attracts around a million tourists each year.
The views of the coastline are absolutely stunning here and it’s one of the best places to go for a coastal hike in the UK.
There’s plenty to see and do when visiting the Seven Sisters cliffs, but you may want to make the most of your time and visit the beautiful surrounding areas too, not just the cliffs.
Knowing where to go and what to see is not easy, so let’s look in detail at what exactly you can expect on a tour from London.
Have time to explore Brighton
If you’re travelling from London to see the Seven Sisters cliffs then you may wish to stop off at Brighton on the way to the cliffs and spend a few hours there.
Brighton is my favourite place in the whole of the UK; it’s an amazing seaside city with so many places to visit, it is quite unlike the rest of the country.
So I highly recommend spending some time there before heading off to Seven Sisters. Here’s my list of recommended things to do when visiting Brighton:
- Go shopping in the North Laines – a district of Brighton that’s famous for it’s independent stores, including clothes shops, antique shops, cafes, restaurants and really cool street art.
- Visit the magnificent Royal Pavilion – this is an amazing piece of Indian inspired architecture in Brighton that was once owned by King George IV and dates back to the 1700’s.
- Take in the views at Brighton Pier – the pier is full of amusement rides and has some great views of Brighton’s beach and coastline.
It’s easy to spend several hours exploring Brighton, and I would recommend visiting the city for around 2-3 hours before heading on to Seven Sisters.
How to get to Brighton from London: train is a quick option, and it’s easy to catch a train from either London Bridge or London Victoria, which takes less than an hour to reach Brighton.
See the Seven Sisters Cliffs
After visiting Brighton it’s time to head to the main attraction; the Seven Sisters cliffs! This will take around an hour to reach via car and there is parking available at the Seven Sisters park.
➡️ Pro Tip: If relying on public transport then you can catch the 12X bus to East Dean Garage and from there you can walk to the Seven Sisters park.
Reaching the cliffs all the way from London on your own via public transport is a long day of catching trains and buses, which is quite exhausting.
I would recommend driving to the cliffs if possible which is a lot easier, or going there as a part of a tour.
Having a tour guide fill you in on all the history of the cliffs and the surrounding areas is a vastly more educational trip, rather than just travelling there by yourself without any information.
Once you reach Seven Sisters park then it’s really up to you how to spend your time there. You can walk along the coast path to the beach or up the cliffs themselves for the most spectacular views.
The total length of the Seven Sisters cliffs is around 8 miles. If you wish to walk the entirety of the cliffs (which I have done) then it will take you several hours. This is quite a tiring hike, so make sure you’re well prepared.
Most people just walk up to the cliffs to see the views, or walk a portion of the cliffs which I recommend doing.
Of course, you don’t have to hike up the cliffs if you wish, you can just stroll along the beach which is just as beautiful.
There is also a cafe at the Seven Sisters park called the Saltmarsh Cafe where you can relax and enjoy the views. And there is a delightful pub nearby called ‘The Cuckmere Inn‘ which serves traditional British pub food in a serene spot.
I can personally recommend both and would advise you to reserve a table at the Cuckmere Inn way in advance as it gets extremely busy there – especially on weekends.

Places To Visit Close To Seven Sisters
There are several places of interest around Seven Sisters that you may wish to explore when visiting.

Devil’s Dyke National Trust
Devil’s Dyke is just 5 miles north of Brighton and is the UK’s biggest dry valley and is a part of the South Downs national park.
From the top of Devil’s Dyke you will see absolutely stunning panoramic views of the English countryside. On a clear summer’s day you can see for miles and it is a popular spot for hang gliders too.
I’ve hiked to Devil’s Dyke several times and always loved taking in the views – you can see for absolute miles on a clear sunny day and it’s a very peaceful place too.
Middle Farm
If you want to experience a traditional Sussex farm then I highly recommend a visit Middle Farm in Lewes, Sussex.
It’s a fun place for kids to explore and see animals and there is a farm shop, a tearoom and a collection of ciders.
Entry to the open farm is by pre-booked ticket only, so make sure to book your ticket in advance.
Long Man of Wilmington
This is a famous carving of a human figure that has continued to baffle archaeologists and historians for hundreds of years and is definitely worth seeing in person.
No one knows the actual history of this impressive symbol, who made it and why. There are various theories that the figure represents fertility or could be a tribute to an ancient warrior.
Belle Tout Lighthouse
If you want to see some of the most amazing panoramic views of the Seven Sisters cliffs, Beachy Head and the Sussex coastline, then you must check out the Belle Tout Lighthouse in Eastbourne.
Although a decommissioned lighthouse, it now operates as a unique bed and breakfast and is known to be one of Britain’s most famous lighthouses, originally built in 1832.
Seaford Head Golf Course
Another great location where you can see some of the most breath taking views of Sussex is at Seaford Head golf course.
And if you want to play a round of golf while enjoying the views then that’s entirely possible, and there is a lovely restaurant at the golf course too.

Is it safe to climb the Seven Sisters cliffs?
The cliffs are safe to climb as long as you use your common sense and don’t stray too close to the cliff edge.
Climbing the cliffs can be extremely dangerous and it is known that around 20 people a year die from falling off the cliff edge accidentally. A lot of tourists are too eager to get the perfect photo or selfie and get far too close to the edge.
I’ve seen people get too close on several occasions and it’s always shocking to see. There are no barriers around the cliffs whatsoever, so please practice caution when climbing the cliffs!
How long should you stay at Seven Sisters for?
It totally depends on how much time you have available! If you just want to wander around either the beach or the top of the cliffs (or both) and enjoy the views, then you could do this within 1-2 hours.
If you want to walk some or all of the cliffs then give yourself plenty of time, and factor in a break at either the cafe or pub nearby. I would recommend at least visiting for half a day, possibly longer.

Quite simply because there are seven hilltops that make up the cliffs and it’s been called the Seven Sisters for hundreds of years.
Is it difficult to walk the Seven Sisters?
No, if you’re in good physical health then you won’t find walking the Seven Sisters cliffs too difficult at all. The most difficult part is climbing up the first cliff which is quite a steep hill, but after that it’s fine.
If you decide to walk the entirety of the cliffs then this can take several hours and can be tiring, so make sure you take plenty of water and snacks with you for the long walk.
