Known as one of the most beautiful beach towns in all of Morocco, Agadir is a dream destination all year round for many families, but is Agadir safe for families?
I visited Agadir during the Christmas holidays with my family in 2024, so I’m the perfect travel blogger to give an honest review of what to expect.

Is Agadir Safe For Families?
Yes, Agadir is considered to be a safe place for families visiting on holiday. Morocco in general is known for being a family-friendly destination, and the same is certainly true for Agadir.
Of course, petty crime does occur in Agadir just as it does in any tourist destination. However, overall, you don’t have much to be concerned about when it comes to safety.
If you’re still not convinced, then here is my experience of visiting Agadir with my family:
My Positive Family Experience In Agadir
My holiday with my family to Agadir during Christmas 2024 was an altogether positive experience. Everyone we met, whether they were hotel staff, taxi drivers or food stall sellers at Souk El Had, was very friendly and accommodating.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Agadir to families. It is a beautiful place and safety isn’t something you need to be concerned about.
My Only Negative Family Experience In Agadir
However, there were minor negatives about my family holiday in Agadir that would be remiss not to detail in this blog post.
There are a few locals and immigrants wandering the promenade and main beach area in Agadir, attempting to sell various fake goods to the throngs of tourists visiting the area.
This is of course true for many tourist destinations and shouldn’t come as a surprise.
When my family decided to take a peaceful stroll along the promenade one evening, we were disturbed by a local woman and her children begging for money.
Despite my family members declining to give money to the local, she continued to harass and follow us for several minutes, which caused a bit of distress for us, especially for the younger members of my family.
This is an unfortunate but not uncommon occurrence when visiting destinations where poverty exists. So definitely expect this when visiting Agadir, but don’t let it affect your decision-making.
Tourist Police
Another reassuring sign saw during my stay in Agadir, was the constant presence of police patrolling the promenade in the main area in front of the beach.
I saw several armed police officers throughout the week, and our hotel also had a strong security presence.
Safe Areas To Stay In Agadir
Anywhere next to Agadir beach is safe to stay. The beach itself stretches for 10 kilometres, and there are numerous 4 and 5-star hotels situated just a short walk from the beach.
This is the main tourist area in Agadir and I recommend staying here with you and your family if you want to experience the best that the beach town has to offer.
If you want to stay away from the beach and tourists, then there are several safe neighbourhoods, such as Haut founty.
And if you’re a golf fanatic then good news – there are several golf resort hotels where you can stay and practice your swing as well.
Areas To Avoid In Agadir
I recommend staying close to your hotel and the beach area, especially at night to ensure a safe and pleasant time in Agadir.
I would avoid the following areas, which can be dangerous (especially at night-time): Tilila, El Houda, Hay Mohammedy, El Massira, Talboujt, Jmaika, Lekhyam, Ttssila.
These areas have poor reputations when it comes to drug use and crime and should be considered potentially unsafe for tourists to visit.

Is Souk El Had Safe For Families?
Souk El Had is Morocco’s largest souk market located in Agadir and is a must-visit place for tourists and families when visiting the area.
But is it safe for families? I visited the market by myself on Christmas Day and felt very safe. Everyone was very friendly and I spotted plenty of police throughout the market.

Top Family Activities In Agadir
There are plenty of top family activities when visiting Agadir, here are what I believe to be a must when visiting:
Relax on the beach
Agadir is of course famous for the most glorious beach in all of Morocco and the sole reason why so many families visit the place is to enjoy some sunbathing.
That’s exactly what my family and I did almost every day during our holiday to Agadir. I can attest that the beach is indeed beautiful, although swimming in the sea is a bit chilly!
There are several roped off sunbed areas reserved for hotel guests, which can get crowded at times but are worth it.
Chill out at your resort
Agadir’s hotel resorts alongside the beach are exceptional, with a lot of 4 and 5-star hotels to choose from. You can expect top-quality service at these hotels. Most hotels include several restaurants as well as evening entertainment every night.

Visit Croco Park
Croco Park is probably the best family attraction Agadir has available, especially if you have young children. The park is home to over 300 crocodiles and is a fun day out for the kids.
Explore Souk El Had
As mentioned above, Souk El Had is Morocco’s largest souk market and a must-do activity for you and your family when in Agadir, especially if you want to experience the local culture.
The market is a huge place, with stalls selling spices, clothing, pottery, jewellery and much more.
Check Out The Kasbah of Agadir
The Kasbah of Agadir is one of the most interesting places in Agadir, if you would like to experience a taste of history.
Perched at the top of Agadir’s unmissable hilltop, the Kasbah is a fascinating ruin area of a former fortress, dating back to the 1500s.
Take A Day Trip To Paradise Valley
Paradise Valley is an excellent choice if you and your family want to escape Agadir for a day trip and experience some of Morocco’s unforgettable nature.
Situated within the High Atlas Mountains outside Agadir, the valley is a beautiful oasis that features waterfalls, lush greenery and several excellent hiking routes.
Visit Marrakech
Another top option when in Agadir is to visit one of Morocco’s most popular tourist destinations: Marrakech. Completely different from Agadir’s serenity, Marrakech is an overwhelming place full of markets, history and characters.
Reaching Marrakech from Agadir via bus takes around three and a half hours, so it’s worth staying in Marrakech for at least one night, ideally two nights.

Is Agadir safe for solo female travellers?
Yes, Agadir is safe for solo female travellers, just as it is for young families. Of course, be cautious if visiting Agadir on your own, just as you would any other exotic destination.
Is it safe to walk in Agadir at night?
If you stay in the main tourist area alongside the beach, then yes Agadir is safe to walk at night.
You may encounter beggars/sellers as my family did, but the area is well policed and you shouldn’t feel afraid to explore after dark. I highly recommend avoiding certain neighbourhoods outside of the main tourist area near the beach.
What should you avoid doing in Agadir?
You should avoid offending locals by not respecting local customs. Eating, drinking or smoking in public areas is not recommended, especially during Muslim festivals such as Ramadan.
Can you drink alcohol in Agadir?
It is fine to drink alcohol within the premises of your hotel. My hotel had a couple of bars throughout the complex and it wasn’t a problem.
But you should refrain from drinking alcohol in public areas as mentioned above.

In my own experience, Agadir is indeed very safe for families and should not be a deterring factor. Agadir is a beautiful place to visit and the locals that I encountered are all very welcoming and friendly.
